Living in Christ: Heirs of God

December 27, 2020, 1st Sunday of Christmas Theme: “Living in Christ: Heirs of God” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 61:10 – 62:3 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 148 New Testament Proclamation: Galatians 4:4-7 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:22-32

We will tackle the influence of His Family to Jesus and how they helped in fulfilling His calling and purpose.

Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to be circumcised after 8 days, and they went to the temple after 40 days of purification to dedicate the Lord Jesus to God as their sign of obedience to traditions.

This symbolizes that the child is of God, and they acknowledge that their first born will live all the days of his life in serving God— that they are Christ-owned forever.

That’s how our children will grow in the ways of the Lord. That’s what the parents should do: To obey God in the best of our abilities, and through our example we also introduce to our children the ways of God.

Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for the child to see and follow their example in Godly things.

Just like Mary and Joseph, may it be that we also help our children fulfill their calling. It starts from us parents, and above all we should see to it that we have a personal relationship with God because the light of our devotion in serving God is what we will be passing on to our children, and to the next generations to come.

Living in Christ: Witnesses of the Light

December 25, 2020, Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ Theme: “Living in Christ: Witnesses of the Light” Homily by Fr. Andy Ilustre Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 9:2-7 Responsorial Psalm :Isaiah 9:2-7 New Testament Proclamation: Titus 2:11-14 -5a Gospel Proclamation: John 1:1-14

“How can we spread the light to others?”

We need to walk with the Light and be the witness of it. In the beginning, before all time, the ‘Word’ was Christ and He was continually co-existing with God in the beginning. The Lord reigned before the world has begun together with His son Christ Jesus. He still does, and He will forever.

We should spend time with the Light so that we may manifest the light to the world. In the gospel, John was commissioned by God and sent forth. This man came as a witness to testify about the Light so that all might believe through him. You cannot tell who Christ is if you do not know Him. John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.

We only become a witness when we know the personality of God. Having a deep relationship with a person is also the same thing with the Lord. Through spending quality time—either by praying or meditating His word or both, we will get to know the very Heart of God. If we personally know Him it will become easy for us to become living testimonies and witnesses to the world of how good, faithful, and sovereign our God is.

Living in Christ: The Light That Shines in the Darkness

December 24, 2020 Theme: “Living in Christ: The Light That Shines in the Darkness” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation : Isaiah 52:7-10 New Testament Proclamation: Hebrews 1:1-5a Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 96 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:1-14

Today, amidst the chaos, the pandemic, and the uncertainties, this is the good news:

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14 NKJV

The birth of Jesus Christ brings joy. And we rejoice because our Saviour is born. The birth of Christ brings peace. Let us continue to pray, and offer our praise and worship to God. These things that we do are the evidence that fear doesn’t control us—and we must never let fear reign in our hearts.

The birth of Christ brings goodwill and favor. We receive all the grace, mercy, favor and blessings from God because of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The celebration of Christmas leads us to mission—His birth is also a responsibility. We’ve been celebrating Christmas Candle Light Service for more than 30 years. Let’s take time to asses and ask ourselves, “In all these years, what have I learned?”

May this joyous celebration not end as tradition but as mission. In verses 14-18 of Luke 1, the shepherds heard the praises from the angel and the heavenly hosts to God. They went to Bethlehem and when they saw Jesus, they made widely known Jesus. They became missionaries.

The celebration of Christmas leads to the mission: bringing the good news.

We must go to the world and bring the good news of salvation. Our mission must not only be confined inside the four corners of the church only. And we proclaim this through our lives; seeking to bring peace and compassion to the world just as Jesus did.

Living in Substantial Love

December 20, 2020, 4th Sunday of Advent (Year B) Theme: “Living In Substantial Love” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation: 2 Samuel 7:1-11; 16 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 89 New Testament Proclamation: Romans 16:25-27 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 1: 26-28

Truly, the word LOVE is already overused. But it is stated on the bible that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast… always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres and that Love never fails.”

God’s Love is indeed everlasting and essential by giving His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Even though we are sinners, He never flounders to continually give us grace and never ending affection. With this, how are we going to respond to His substantial love?

One way of showing our love to God is by obeying Him faithfully. John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will obey me.” By doing so, we must humbly submit to His commandments because obedience is also a form of love.

Moreover, one manner of responding to God’s love is by serving Him. As His people, we must also let God take dominion over our lives and use our talents for His kingdom. God is also working mightily on using His people for His righteous plans. Therefore, release your control for it only gives us fear and oppression; but with God, love casts out all fear.

In short, His coming also means obedience and the willingness to submit. Associating this matter during the time of Advent or the waiting for the Lord, it is necessary to be patient and apply the things that you have heard on today’s teaching. We should also repent and prepare ourselves for the kingdom of God is at hand.

Living in Fullness of Joy

December 13, 2020, 3rd Sunday of Advent (Year B) Theme: “Living in Fullness of Joy” Homily by Fr. Romie Jun Peñalosa Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 61:1-4, 10-11 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 126 New Testament Proclamation: 1Thessalonians 5:16-24 Gospel Proclamation: John 1:6-8; 19-28

There is a reason why we need to rejoice—and the reason for that is because Christ is with us. In His presence, there is fullness of joy and He opens up our hearts so we can express that joy by REJOICING in His presence.

Joy is NOT HAPPINESS; NOT a FEELING but JOY is something deeper, engraved and deep-seated in our hearts that has something to do with our ATTITUDE. Let us seek joy which is permanent in our life rather than happiness that is temporary. Joy is the EVIDENCE in our life not with our happiness but by the ENDURANCE that we have—just like how Jesus endured the pain of the cross and that is because of the JOY that is in Him.

Joy is an ATTITUDE that we need to cultivate. If we want to seek Christ and wait for Him to come in our lives, then we need that JOY in our hearts.

“WE DO NOT KNOW WHO WE ARE” is one of the reasons that prevent us from rejoicing. We do not know our purpose in our life; we do not know who we are or what we are supposed to do.

If we want to experience that JOY deep within us, we need to ask questions that are deep—like WHO AM I? WHY AM I HERE? WHY AM I ALIVE TODAY? And the answers to these questions will DEFINE our life.

Let us NOT define or identify ourselves by what we do; what other people say or what we have or what we have not. Let us derive, define or identify our sense of WORTH and knowing our PURPOSE and deriving from WHO WE KNOW OURSELVES TO BE.

Let us not pretend to be someone we are not! This is why we are not joyful in our lives. It prevents us to rejoice and to be joyful in our lives. We are UNIQUE and each of us is SPECIAL to God.

The moment we discover who we truly are—that is the time where JOY begins to come out. Problems in our lives may come, trials, sadness may come but joy will always be there and cause us to ENDURE those problems, trials, etc. For the JOY of the Lord is our STRENGTH!

Coming to Christ, putting our hope and to seek Him will give us the real identity in our life of who we truly are. Jesus is like a mirror that when we see Him, we see our true self—WHO WE ARE! Let us always put our hope and faith in Christ!

Living in Anchored Faith

December 6, 2020, 2nd Sunday of Advent (Year B)
Theme: “Living in Anchored Faith”
Homily by Fr. Romie Jun Peñalosa

Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 40:1-11
Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 85
New Testament Proclamation: 2 Peter 3:8-15
Gospel Proclamation: Mark 1:1-8

Every important event in our lives is meant to change us.

Advent or the season for the second coming of Jesus Christ, is a time where God brings something new in our lives. God brings us to a new beginning, a time to refocus and discern what is most essential in our lives. In this preparation, we need to be mindful of three important things based on our gospel today according to Mark 1:1-8:

1. Sacrament of Baptism

Let us focus our mind on our baptism, on how we became a member of the family of Christ.

2. Sacrament of Confession

A gift of God to unload our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

3. Sacrament of Confirmation

God continues to fulfill what He has given us in our baptism through the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit empowers us to be bold in sharing God’s Word and the life of Jesus especially those who are longing and hungry for His love.

As a family, let us strengthen our faith in preparation for the second coming of Christ.

11-15-2020 Homily by Fr. Romie Jun Penalosa

We Proclaim Productivity

November 15, 2020, 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “We Proclaim Productivity!”
Homily by Fr. Romie-Jun Penalosa

Old Testament Proclamation: Zephaniah 1: 7, 12-18
Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 90: 2-12
New Testament Proclamation: 1 Thessalonians 5: 2-6
Gospel Proclamation: Matthew 25: 14; 19-29

The Gospel talks about God’s dominion over the earth and its fullness and Him entrusting His property to us. Likewise, in the Parable of Talents, the Master gave to each servant talents “…in proportion to their abilities.

“Each wealth given to the three servants was meant to produce more for the Master and not just return the exact same amount without producing fruits (by investing and generating a return).

The reason why the 3rd servant hid the talent given to him was because he knew the Master to be a hard man. But, this servant didn’t personally know how good his Master was and that’s why he said, “I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth.

“One of the things that hinders us from producing is fear. Fear will paralyze a person. And in the parable, fear hindered the one-talent servant to be fruitful. He was afraid to take risks. If you are able to maximize the “talent/s” given to you, you can go through life fully equipped and set to win. God said to Adam take dominion over all things.

The more we are productive, the more we take dominion over things. Each of us will give an account of himself (up to the last bit) to the Great Accountant on the last day.

“Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.” – Deuteronomy 8:18 NLTDo not go through life thinking that you are empty.

You have to find a way to activate the great power that has been given to you. God has given you tremendous amounts of ability. And what makes us fearful, not take risks, and venture out is the fact that we don’t really know God. If we are going to be productive people in the place that God has placed us, we must know him intimately well.

Take dominion over poverty and over sicknesses because God has already equipped us. Let us use the authority that He has given us. And how will we know that God has already equipped us and given us the authority? By spending time listening to His Word; attending the Holy Mass, reading the Bible and praying.

We have all the time to produce what we need to produce. How well do you know God in your life?

There are people who know about God but don’t really know Him personally. Take the time to slow down and pause for a while to listen to Him so that you’ll know Him well.
