BELIEVING IN JESUS (WHO HE IS)

(A RECAPITULATION BASED ON THE HOMILY OF +ABP. CRAIG BATES)

The whole community of the Charismatic Episcopal Church are one in the celebration of the sacrificial life offered by our consecrated bishops; + Bp. Raymundo Abogatal, +Abp. Ricardo Alcaraz, and Bp. Gene Lily. Their commitments are manifestations of God’s love shown in their everyday life!

Though Primate Dick Alcaraz is deeply missed, the church will be forever grateful to God for his life, his love for his people; his living legacy left to us.

In today’s teaching, Patriarch emphasizes the simple yet powerful nature of our Lord Jesus Christ. It can be concluded in three (3) key points:

  • Jesus is the Eternal Life. Believing Him as Son of God, assures us of eternal life. “We don’t have eternal life with what we do or what we accomplished; nor we don’t have eternal condemnation because we didn’t do or accomplished nothing.”

“We don’t do anything to get forgiveness; we receive it! When we confess our sins, we receive forgiveness already; same way, we receive love from God! Forgiveness exists because of the cross. We were made and created by God to live in that love; we were made and created to love other people. There is nothing we can do to earn God’s love. He loves us fully and completely from the start!” He said further, that it is not impossible not to love God and our neighbour; for despite the brokenness, the hurt, the strife…at the end of the day, we keep His commandments, and we choose to love and forgive.

  • He is the Eucharist. Jesus himself revealed who He is in the Eucharist! We may not understand intellectually the act of breaking and receiving the bread and wine; how it became His body and blood; but every time we do that, we open our hearts to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. “Even when we doubt, we lack faith…we need to walk with our heart. The more we practice the Eucharist, the more we know and understand and become certain that one day, what it means, will come to our very core of who we are, or who I am in Christ. In communion, we discover we can abide with Him. You and I would no place to go, but when we choose to believe in God, there is no turning back or turning away. We simply find that joy of eternal life with Him because we know who He is.
  • He should be manifested.  Finding now that eternal joy, “we have now eternal relationship with Him, and that we should share the act of that incredible love of Jesus in prayer and in everyday life. Prayer is evidence that God exists. When we pray, we’re saying, “I know Him”. Every day is a continuous process of knowing Him. He is in the elders of our churches, in the men and women, in the poor and suffering and especially in children. Patriarch urged us to see these sacrificial life of our bishops as well, manifested in us!

Lastly, +Abp. Bates ask for prayers from us, for him to go back Philippines again and be able to celebrate the great gifts of God with our bishops and churches.

Growing in the Divine Life

For two Sundays now, the Lord emphasizes to us that He is the Living Bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of it or believes will have everlasting and divine life.

What I want to share is about growing and bearing fruits in Eternal Life. This is a reminder of our responsibility and accountability as recipients of this eternal life.

Eternal Life is both a gift and a responsibility. Today, I would give importance to the word “eat.” The word has been mentioned several times in this chapter specially from verses 47 -58. …the one may eat of it and not die, if any one eats of this bread, whoever eats and many more.

First it gives us an idea that eating is connected to growing. Naturally we need to eat so we can grow. Spiritually, we need to continue to abide with Jesus and “eat” His Word and His body and drink His blood in order to grow and be sustained in this divine life. We must grow in faith, love, service, and in our relationship with Him so that we could be life-sharers and givers to the world.

So, to “eat” not only means to partake or put something in your mouth to chew. Figuratively speaking, it means to believe, or to abide, obey, surrender, and be one with Jesus. We should be willing to submit to the Lordship of Jesus in our lives. So every time we partake of body and blood, when the priest would say – “Receive The Body and Blood of Christ” and you say “Amen,” what you are really saying is “Yes Lord, I’m willing to surrender and submit to your will, have your way in me, not my will but your will be done in my life.” That’s our responsibility and accountability as recipients of this divine life.

“Living in Christ: Source of True Life ”

In today’s gospel, Jesus told the Jews (and us) that He is the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven. This is a kind of food that gives us everlasting life if we “eat it” or believe it.

This is the food that He want us to work for. The kind of food that makes us to surrender and do His will. Food for our spiritual journey.

In last week’s scripture, He was the Bread of Heaven at the Table of the Word, and now He is the living bread in the Table of the Lord in the Eucharist.

He wants us to know that He is the bread of life that would give “life” to the world. In verse 51: He emphasized that He is the Living Bread and the bread that He will give is His flesh/body. This refers to His sacrificial death on the cross and His resurrection.

In His finished work on the cross, He gives “life” to the world. Life means salvation of all mankind. Salvation means deliverance from evil.

By His grace, He forgives and delivers us from death as penalty of our sins. As we have faith in His redeeming work, we receive new life, an everlasting and divine life. We don’t need to wait to die and experience everlasting life, we can experience everlasting life today here on earth.

We received divine life during baptism and through the growth of our faith in Him. That divine life in us will continue to flow in us as we continue to “eat” His Word (read, meditate and obey), do prayer and intercession, worship, partake of His body and blood in the eucharist, and being a blessing to others.

By doing these we become a an instrument of bringing life to the world. When we bring love, faith, hope, healing and compassion to others especially in this pandemic, it is an evidence that divine life that flows in us.

Our prayers, worship, and obedience – individually and collectively as a church, bring light, fight spiritual battles, and proclaim the presence of God in this darkness – thus bringing healing and hope to the people. We prove that the Church is the life of the world, and the Divine life in us is greater than death and fear around us.

“Living in Christ: Laboring for Eternity”

Gospel Reading – John 6 : 24 – 35

This is a continuation of our gospel last week on how God fed His people (John 6:1-12). Our gospel reading for today teaches us to seek God for the right reason. In verse 34 – They found out that Jesus was in Capernaum and the disciples followed Jesus.

As His children let us focus on the things of God, seek God for the right reason, seek the Lord not only for what we can get from Him, but for who He is and what we can give to Him in our service, our worship, and in our life. There is more to life than physical needs, Jesus said that we need to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and seek that which endures forever (1 Pet. 1:24-25)

Remember that the word of the Lord is our light and our hope. Seek the things which are above (Col 3:1-2) and focus on the things that are eternal (2 Cor 4:18).

In verses 30-34, Jesus corrects their false concepts concerning Moses’ superiority over Jesus. Remember that our job is not our source, it is only a channel. God is our Source. He is our Bread of Life. We are to lay up treasures in heaven (Matt 6:19-21).

Remember that if you give all your life to the earth, the earth will give you a tomb. But if you give your life to heaven, heaven will give you a throne and a crown.

“Living in Christ: From Lack to Abundance”

This Sunday’s Gospel Reading is just a continuation of last week’s topic about our Good Shepherd who is compassionate. In this gospel reading, Jesus continues to show His disciples about compassion in action. Not just feeling sympathy for the misfortune of others but, finding ways to do something about the problem.

Last Sunday He met their spiritual needs. Today, He met the physical needs of these hungry people.

He asked His disciples what they should do it was a test of faith and compassion for them. It did not mean that Jesus did not know what to do, He already knew what to do.

In Mark 6:36 one disciple proposed a first solution – “send them away.” It was a quick fix. Get rid of the problem – No people, No hassle.

Then Phillip also gave his analyzation of the problem: “We need a lot of money to buy bread and it’s hard to raise funds in this situation, it’s a hopeless one.” Then Andrew followed. He found a boy who had five loaves and two fish but did not know what to do about it.

Obviously, the disciples had no solution at all and failed their faith and compassion test. Then it was time for The Good Shepherd to give His solution. He told them to let the people sit down as He received the five loaves and two fish and gave thanks. (Mark 6:41 -received the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, bless/give thanks, broke the loaves gave to the disciples and they gave to the people)

Then a miracle of multiplication happened. They were all filled, with plenty of left overs. This action reminds us of the Eucharist that Jesus will feed us with His word and His body and blood. It teaches us also that to overcome lack in our life, we should give first to God.

We acknowledge that He is the real source by looking up, being thankful instead of complaining, and giving/blessing others. By doing that all you need to do is watch the miracle happen.

This is an expression of our faith – allowing ourselves to become instruments of His compassion by meeting the needs of others, spirit, soul, and body. Only then can we really say from the heart, and not just a mere confession or a slogan, that “we are blessed to be a blessing.”

Gospel Reading – Mark 6 : 30 – 34


In Mark 6:30-34, Jesus asked the disciples to take a rest for a while. The word “rest” here means to go to a secluded place where we can pray to God. God wanted us to know how important it is to come to Him. As we come to seek God, we come with hunger and thirst with desires and longing for Him.

In verse 34, Jesus saw a multitude. He is moved with compassion because they were like sheep without a shepherd. As a church, we will not move only because it is our duty or obligation. We must also move with compassion.

Remember, God is our shepherd. We should cast all our cares upon Him for He cares for us.

Seek Jesus. Seek God. Those who are weary should come to Jesus for He is a compassionate God. God expects us as a church to come to Him. So as a church, we cannot reject His people especially those who are in need. As Christians, let us move with compassion, just like what Jesus did

Gospel Reading – Mark 6 : 7 – 13

Our gospel reading today is the continuation of last Sunday’s topic – “Focus on Mission.” Our Lord taught the disciples how to do the mission since they were the ones who would continue the ministry of our Lord. He stressed that there will be rejection and opposition, especially in our own family and hometown. But nevertheless, the Lord showed them not to give up or be hindered but to continue preaching the gospel to other people.

Today, He called, sent, and empowered His 12 disciples to embark on their first missionary journey. They had learned and seen from Him what to do; now it’s their turn to do it. The Lord taught them, including us, about missions for I believed that this is now the direction God wants us to go as a church, to expand, make disciples, and build churches.

After the disciples had been commissioned as His representatives, He taught them some practical tips in mission. He emphasized the importance of teamwork as He sent them two by two. He told them not to carry any resources and trust in His divine providence instead. He told them to stay in one house, learning to be content and thankful in every situation. He encouraged them to continue even in the face of rejection and opposition. As they obeyed and went to mission by faith, God proved to them His faithfulness and the power of His Word through signs and wonders. They had learned a valuable lesson that when the Lord of Mission is with you, there is hospitality and victory in the midst of hostility.

Gospel Reading: Mark 6: 1- 6

Today’s Gospel reading centered on this message: “Relying on God’s Grace, Continuing to Serve God, Despite Oppositions”

Living in Christ means embracing His life, His works, and His ministry. “The ministry of Jesus is marked by teachings and mighty works. He showed us clearly how to live that life God wanted us to ive. His teachings have brought that great impact to people that even those we considered least, was greatly amazed by His deeds.

Yet, along these ways, He Himself encountered resistance and oppositions from His own town and family. He experienced rejections from His own kin, because He was known as “just a son of a carpenter”. Here, we can relate to the common mistakes we often made while doing our missions in life too. We tend to look ourselves or someone to our human level and dragging God on our own terms. Which is very wrong! “We need to accept God on His terms and allow ourselves to walk with Him” in carrying our missions and purposes.

Giving God the highest reverence allows us also to have that “healthy breeding atmosphere to grow our faith in Him”. It is of very importance that we need to nurture our faith, by honouring Him with our good works and showing Him our obedience. Our faith in Him then, will give us strength to overcome obstacles and oppositions while working on with our own ministries.

Lastly, Fr. Andy quoted this Gospel reading with these key points:

1) Do not allow the oppositions to discourage you in doing your missions; and

2) Continue to have faith in God and persevere in faithfulness in obeying Him.

Jesus live His life on earth doing ministry of preachings and teachings. A life He wanted us to do also. And that is ALL our missions too!

Background of CEC Foundation Day

CEC Foundation Day was established originally to celebrate the first Patriarch of ICCEC, Abp. Randolph Adler and the founding of the CEC. It was agreed to set aside every Sunday closest to the consecration of Abp. Adler an offering of thanksgiving for his personal use as a blessing to him. But Abp. Adler, a man of generosity decided not to accept the offering as a personal gift but rather establish a fund called the “Foundation Day Fund” to buy land, build or fix buildings all around the world. And that we will be a Communion led by the Spirit and a people who recognize that God wants us to be in a space and land to worship. Since then, we have purchased many properties, built Churches, fixed buildings all for the glory of God.

The Homily

Patriarch Bates emphasized that on CEC Foundation Day, we lay a foundation for the future. We are called to be a people of the future who look for the coming of the Lord not only in heaven but here on earth.

By laying a foundation for the future, we are being taught by God how to love. Love is about living for another and surrendering our will to God’s will to love.

On foundation day, we also lay a seed for the future of our children. We shift our focus from ‘my future to other’s future’; from ‘selfishness to selflessness’; from ‘what can I get out of life to how can I live for others around me.’

In our children’s eyes, we see a future, something greater than what we have now. It is now time to leave the past and live for the future. By staying in the past, we deny the power of the cross, the resurrection, and the hope that it brings for us to live and press on.

Our future is a Yes and Amen for God! We will be blessed to see our inheritance. God has an inheritance for us that will grow into generations.

May the Lord, when He returns find us living by faith:

  • Will He see us giving reluctantly or generously?
  • Will He see us walking in fear or faith?
  • Will He see us in bitterness and resentment or pursuing love with everything that we have?
  • Will the CEC be a force of division or unity?

Most importantly, our CEC Foundation Day Offering reminds us to give thanks for the many rivers that is with us – a move of the Church that is fully charismatic, fully evangelical, and fully sacramental and liturgical. We also thank our leadership, our Clergies who help us fulfill our vision, and bring us into the presence of Jesus even if it is difficult for them at times.

On our CEC Foundation Day, and every time we gather as a Church, let us be overcome by the presence of the Lord! Surely the presence of the Lord is with us always!

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 5 : 14 – 17

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 107 : 2 – 3; 23 – 30

Gospel Reading Mark 4 : 35 – 41

In every unpredictable storms/problems in our lives we need to focus on these things:

1. Choose faith. Fear and faith cannot exist at the same time. We need to stand in our faith.

2. Rebuke the problem. Speak against the problem through God’s Word. Do not be controlled by feelings or emotions but know who you are in God.

3. Be still. Dwell in peace, knowing God’s power is working in your problems.

4. Act in God’s authority. Know and act on God’s authority given to us. Focus on what God can do to your problems.

The problem with us is that, not because that we do not know what to do, but because we do not do what we know.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5 : 1 – 10

Psalm Reading: Psalm 92 : 1 – 2; 6 -7 ; 12 – 15

Gospel Reading: Mark 4 : 26 – 34

Our scripture reading today assures us that the Word of God, The Seed of the kingdom, would surely grow and produce in our lives. Yes, we also have to do our part like a in a normal farm. The soil should be plowed or cultivated to make it fertile, and you need to provide a fitting atmosphere for planting.

It means that is our responsibility to make our hearts fertile and ready to be planted with the Word of God through repentance, humility, and willingness to receive and obey what we have heard. This is a very clear distinction between human responsibility and God’s sovereignty.

The process of how the Word of God grows inside of us and changes our lives is all through God’s grace and mercy. The growth is a process, and if it is constant, it will yield bountiful harvest.

But no matter how good the seed is, it’s still our decision to accept or reject it. This will determine whether the seed will be fruitful or unfruitful, or produce or not produce in our lives. If it’s not producing, then there is something wrong in the soil — and that is our heart, not the seed.

So, let’s examine our lives today. For many years of hearing the Word of God, can we see in our lives the fruits that they have produced? Whatever is the result, one thing is for sure – there is nothing wrong with the seed. It is perfect and it will always grow and prosper where you plant it.

So is the Kingdom of God, it continues to grow surely and steadily up to eternity.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4 : 13 – 18

Psalm Reading: Psalm 130 : 1 – 8

Gospel Reading: Mark 3 : 20 – 30

Because of sin, man’s relationship with God was broken.

But God promised to redeem His people so He sent His only begotten Son. He came to rebuild the kingdom of God. He performs so many miracles in our lives but satan keeps deceiving God’s people. It is the only way of satan–to deceive people.

But Jesus already disarmed satan and and there is no way that he can rise up against Jesus. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy but Jesus is always there to defend His people and He already came to destroy the works of the enemy.

The truth is Jesus is our ally, not out enemy. Jesus is with us forever and He is greater than anyone else. CHRIST is the LORD.
