Overcome the storms with Jesus
In this Sunday Mass Homily at Saint Michael Kalibo, +Bp. Romie-Jun Peñalosa reminded us that we can overcome the storms with Jesus.
In the Gospel, when Jesus learned about the death of John the Baptist, He went up the mountain to pray. There, He spent time in solitude and brought His fears before the Father. Although Jesus is God, we must not forget that He is also human. Therefore, He experienced fear just as we do.
In our lives, storms are inevitable. However, we must find the courage to face our fears. Before anything else, we must spend time in solitude with God, just as Jesus did when He experienced fear. In solitude, we allow ourselves to be alone with Jesus. We acknowledge our problems while keeping our focus on God, who is greater than anything we may face.
Bishop Peñalosa also described three kinds of fear. First is toxic fear, which can eventually lead to anxiety. We must guard our hearts against this kind of fear because it can become unhealthy and overwhelming. Second is good or healthy fear. For example, the fear of getting sick or being hospitalized can keep us alert and encourage us to make wise and careful decisions. We should recognize this fear without allowing it to turn into anxiety.
Lastly, there is holy fear, or the fear of the Lord. This fear comes from our love and reverence for God. Unlike toxic fear, holy fear draws us closer to Him and helps us grow in faith.
As the storms in our lives arise, our faith in God must also rise. Focus on God, face your fears, and overcome the storms with Jesus. When we place our fears in His hands, we can move forward with courage, faith, and hope.
