Gospel Reading: John 16: 1- 15
The first Sunday of Pentecost marks the birth of the church. Our gospel from the book of John 16:1-15 talks about the work of the Holy Spirit.
One of the things that the Holy Spirit would do for us is to guide us; He will guide us to an opportunity to be a blessing to others.
The Holy Spirit is our Paraclete-our helper, the one who helps us. During the ascension, Jesus brought our humanity with Him so that when He goes to heaven all of us are represented by Him before God.
In John 15:7 when Jesus tells His disciples that it is good for them that He would go to heaven so that He would send the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will dwell and remain in us. And now God will be represented on earth by His people through the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit came in the form of tongues of fire. And when the fire came upon them (His disciples), they started speaking in different languages- the first sign of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the church now came out and the church started its mission in proclaiming and preaching the gospel.
It is the same fire of the Holy Spirit that burns inside our hearts to cleanse us from our weaknesses so that the power of Christ will come out. That same fire is burning within the Church; that fire will never be quenched, that fire will fuel the church to do the mission.
Now the church will go out with the power and help of the Holy Spirit and today we are reminded that we have a mission, and the reason why we are empowered by the Holy Spirit because we are on a mission.
The purpose of that power is to aid us in our mission as Christ sent us. Amen
