God is Compassionate
In this Sunday Mass homily at Saint Michael Kalibo, +Bp. Romie-Jun Peñalosa emphasized that God is Compassionate. Today’s Gospel recounts the miracle of the five loaves and two fish. When the disciples realized that the crowd was too large for them to feed, their immediate response was to send the people away. However, because God is compassionate, Jesus welcomed the people to stay and miraculously fed them.
Furthermore, the Bishop reminded us that we should never have a dismissive attitude toward our brothers and sisters. Instead, we are called to help them. Serving others, even while facing our own struggles, shifts our attention away from ourselves and keeps us focused on what we can do to make a difference in their lives.
Moreover, the Bishop reminded us that even the little things we offer to God can become something greater in His hands. When we entrust our humble offerings to Him, He transforms what seems like nothing into something meaningful—a characteristic that is evident in the miracles of Jesus.
Finally, the Bishop highlighted the three elements of the Holy Eucharist that we need in times of scarcity: God takes, God blesses, and God gives. When God takes, we should surrender. When He blesses us, we should thank Him and give Him praise. And when He gives, we should receive His gifts with grateful hearts. These truths remind us once again that God is Compassionate, always providing for His people even in moments of need.
